Dr. Michael Glogauer of UHN has been awarded the 2024 CADR/ACFD National Research Award. This prestigious accolade recognizes his pioneering work in oral health and immunology, particularly his groundbreaking research on neutrophils and their impact on both oral and systemic diseases.
Dr. Glogauer’s studies have greatly enhanced the understanding of neutrophil biology. Neutrophils, a type of blood cell, serve as a crucial component of the body’s initial immune response. He identified a vital subset of neutrophils that play a key role in preventing infections in patients with neutropenia (a condition characterized by low neutrophil levels) and those undergoing bone marrow transplants.
His work has received international recognition and led to the creation of innovative diagnostic methods, including an oral rinse protocol to monitor immune function in chemotherapy patients. His research into the interactions between the oral microbiome and the innate immune system has yielded significant insights into biofilm formation and dental plaque, influencing the wider field of oral microbiology.
